Attendance Expectations at Manurewa West Primary School

At Manurewa West Primary School, regular attendance is essential to student wellbeing, learning success, and strong social connections. Being at school every day supports students to feel safe, build positive relationships, and fully engage in their learning.

We hold high expectations for attendance and work in partnership with whānau to ensure students attend school regularly and on time. Every day at school matters, and absences can have a significant impact on learning progress, confidence, and belonging.

Manurewa West Primary School takes a supportive but firm approach to attendance. When attendance concerns arise, families can expect timely communication from the school. Our focus is always on understanding barriers, working collaboratively with whānau, and putting appropriate supports in place to help students return to regular attendance.

Where patterns of absence continue and do not improve, the school will follow a stepped response aligned with Ministry of Education requirements. This may include meetings, attendance plans, and involvement of external support agencies if required. Our intention at all times is to work together in the best interests of the child.

We encourage parents and caregivers to communicate promptly with the school if their child is absent and to keep contact details up to date. We also welcome early conversations if families are experiencing challenges that may affect attendance.

Ultimately, all families share a responsibility to support regular school attendance. It is not acceptable for ongoing absence to negatively affect a child’s learning or the learning of others.
